Ralph W. Burton was born in 1905 at Newington, Ontario. Interested in drawing from a very young age, he began his formal art studies at twelve in Ottawa under the Paris-trained artist Prof. Chaume. Burton continued to study and worked as a professional artist from 1930 onwards. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) during World War II. In 1947 he applied for his military discharge to study “out-door” painting under A. Y. Jackson at the Banff School of Fine Arts.

Burton returned to Ottawa in 1949 to continue his career and teach. Along with artist Maurice Haycock, he would accompany Jackson on sketching trips to the Gatineau area, Eastern Ontario and beyond. Burton, like Dr. Jackson, sketched on site with oils on board sometimes later committing these works to larger canvases.  

The West End Gallery represented A. Y. Jackson in 1964 when the gallery reopened on Greene Avenue. Jackson introduced gallery director Florence Millman to the work of Ralph Burton on a visit to Ottawa.  An exhibition was organized for May, 1967 with the sole proviso that Jackson would attend the vernissage. Jackson arrived with Ralph Burton from Ottawa and close friends Dr. & Mrs. Arthur Lismer, Anne Savage, Nora Collyer and Sam Borenstein all attended.   

Ralph W. Burton est né en 1905 à Newington, Ontario. Il s’est intéresse au dessin à un très jeune âge à Ottawa sous la direction de Prof. Chaume de Paris. Par la suite Burton a poursuivit son éducation artistique à Ottawa et à débuté sa carriere d’artiste professionnel à compte de 1930. Lors de la secondaire guerre mondiale, il s'est joint à la RCAF qu’il sert jusqu’en 1947. Il quitte le service actif pour se joindre à A. Y. Jackson à Banff pour completer son education artistique.  

En 1949 il revient à Ottawa et devient professeur d’art. Lors de cette period il se lie d’amitié avec A. Y. Jackson et parcours la region avec le maître pour sketcher et peindre. Burton est revenu à Ottawa pour continuer sa carrière. En 1949 il à pris la position “de professeur d'art” à Ottawa.

La Galerie West End en représenté A. Y. Jackson lors de sa reouverture en 1964. En 1966 lors d’une visite A. Y. Jackson presente Ralph Burton à la directrice de la galerie Florence Millman.  Au mois de mai 1967, une exposition de Burton fut presenté à la galerie West End avec le support de A. Y. Jackson, Arthur Lismer, Nora Collyer, Anne Savage et Sam Borenstein.
